ABSTRACT

A mainstream schoolteacher starting her career in 1960 and ending it in the 1980s will undoubtedly have met a range of pupils with different needs and interests. There is no such thing as a homogenous group. However, the range of needs that teacher would have encountered is certain to have been narrower than someone starting a career in 2011. There has been a succession of legislation in the UK which has driven the policy of inclusion (see Table 6.1).
