From music hall to Hitsville
Popular music, pop music: from the radio, in the music hall, off the screen, on the juke box, on the record player, in the dance hall, at the club, in youth cultures, in the street . . . urban sounds, the sounds of our time. The activities surrounding popular music, and the place it occupies in the often distractedly received soundscape of the contemporary city, suggests, despite the 'noise' and 'nonsense' regularly attributed to it, that it involves an intelligible soundtrack. In the next three chapters I will try to indicate where some of these sounds came from and what some of them might 'mean'.
