ABSTRACT

LOOKING AHEAD Chapter 2 introduced two kinds of obstruent consonants, plosives and fricatives, and two kinds of sonorant consonants, nasals and liquids. Chapter 3 introduced the concepts of phoneme, allophone, and distinctive features. This chapter presents an inventory of English consonant phonemes, their allophones, and their distinctive features. Section 4.1 takes up the distinctive features under these headings: manners of articulation; articulators; the voiced/voiceless contrast; and tongue shape. Section 4.2 surveys consonant allophones.
