ABSTRACT

Over the past sixty years, the forms and characteristics of peace missions have evolved in myriad ways, depending on the context and the actors involved. For this reason, arriving at an exhaustive definition that holistically describes these phenomena is an arduous task. In 1984, the International Peace Academy defined the peacekeeping operations as an intervention of “prevention, containment, moderation and termination of hostilities between and/or within states, through the mediation of a third party intervention organized and directed internationally and working with multinational military personnel, police and civil order to restore and maintain peace.”
