ABSTRACT

Well, yes babies do have problems, but even more, parents have problems about getting their relationship with their baby going. Recognising these early difficulties can be an optimistic process, and being involved therapeutically with parents and infants can be effective in helping them to make a good start with each other. The attachment process can be greatly enhanced, and there is a good chance that strengthening the relationship at this early point will help prevent future difficulties (Fonagy 1998). This work is flourishing around the world; various writers have conceptualised it, and described their own style of therapy: Barrows (1997), Cramer (1995), Hopkins (1992), Lieberman and Pawl (1993), Stern (1995) and Watillon (1993).
