ABSTRACT

Some ‘mistakes’ occur when people use regional dialects rather than Standard English. A common error for trainee teachers in many regions is: ‘Who is sat nicely?’ Then there is the confusion over when to say ‘John and I ’ as opposed to ‘John and me’. However, we do all have quite a sophisticated understanding of English grammar, even if we happily deviate from Standard English several times a day.
