ABSTRACT
The spread of computers in school-level education and homes means that many students now arrive at university thoroughly familiar with machines and software. However, every cohort still has members without this advantage, typically mature students whose school education finished before the late 1980s. This chapter is dedicated particularly to these non-initiates in the field of computing. Seasoned users should feel free to by-pass it, but might still find it helpful to browse.
