Erich Fromm warned that ‘there is hardly any activity, any enterprise, which is started with such tremendous hopes and expectations and yet which fails so regularly as love’ (1956, in Sternberg and Barnes, 1988, p. 38). As escalating divorce statistics in the Western world demonstrate so starkly, many romantic relationships come to an end, as of course do other types of partnership. For this reason, recent research on relationships has begun to change from its previous focus on relationship formation to factors involved in relationship breakdown.
