ABSTRACT

To comprehend fully the evolution of Heinz Kohut's ideas, psychotherapists and analysts alike must understand classical Freudian theory as Kohut had learned, integrated and eventually extended it. To this end I present the classical Freudian foundation of this pioneering thinker through a discussion of the Freudian Theory course he taught at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. In my effort I hope to provide a glimpse of Kohut's style as a teacher. Missing, of course, will be his spontaneity and erudition, not to mention his charisma. Present, I hope, will be the clarity, order and organization that were the hallmarks of his teaching.
