ABSTRACT
Kohut's 1971 publication of Analysis of the Self opened a window of fresh debate in the psychoanalytic atmosphere. His new ideas met with great enthusiasm in some quarters and elicited a vehement response in others. His suggestion that narcissism has a separate line of development carried new clinical implications while simultaneously challenging the centrality of the oedipal complex.
