Imagination: definitions and problems

Imagination is a word which we keep using without thinking very much about it; we use it with varying degrees of approval; we admire someone for being imaginative, we wish we had the imagination of a popular story-teller; we wish some people would stop imagining things, we worry about books, films, advertisements which overstimulate the imagination; we claim that we can't imagine, we talk of encouraging children's imagination, we say that the child lives in a world of imagination. It is in fact one of those useful but misleading words which can fit without any perceptible jarring into a good many contexts.
