ABSTRACT

Should the school subject of physical education attempt to encourage pupils to be responsible for themselves, for their actions and for others? Additionally, should physical education take upon itself a responsibility to address issues of personal development, social education and the inculcation of moral values that society suggests are desirable in order for people to be socially functional and acceptable? And lastly, can and should physical education be concerned with the business of producing school leavers who are educated in citizenship, who are able to be rational and politically literate citizens, and who realize what the idea of citizenship means for a young person in society today?
