ABSTRACT

The Hebrew Bible presents a quite clear schematic outline of the history of Israelite religion. Israel took its origins in historical events and divine revelations which effectively defined her as the people of Yahweh. The foundation of the nation lay in her relationship with the one God, Yahweh. Other gods, indeed, there may have been, and into the worship of these gods Israel may from time to time have strayed; but this was, and was always judged to have been, apostasy. Israel’s constitution at Sinai was as the covenant people of the one God, Yahweh.
