ABSTRACT

Planning must be considered within the context of an ongoing cycle which includes observation, assessment and evaluation as part of a continuous process. This chapter asks why this process is so fundamental to children’s learning and development. The planning cycle for babies and children under three includes observation as a key element, worthy of further discussion. Accurately recording the outcomes of an observation is looked at in terms of making a so-called valid judgement or assessment. The chapter looks at how to use observational information as the basis for planning environments, routines and activities that will enhance children’s learning and development. The chapter elucidates how the use of a range of observation strategies can provide insights into children’s social, emotional, physical and academic development.
