ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a discussion of what learning means in relation to babies and children under three and what is included in early years curricula to support learning centred on a range of potential approaches. It is followed by an overview of six areas of developmental learning, each of which is outlined briefly and followed by examples of children’s learning set in context and also in relation to an appropriately balanced curriculum. Implications for the early years practitioner in relation to planning are then outlined. Throughout the chapter the early years practitioner is encouraged to think carefully about their role and the basis from which they undertake planning.
