More Cracks in the Water
Just as the assemblage of modern automobility-highways, automobiles, traffic planning, urban planning, drivers, etc.—is “integral to the privatization, individualization, and emotionalization of consumer society as a whole,”1 a ferry mobility assemblage is integral to the constitution of an archipelagic society. Ferries constantly pull and push islanders and coasters for many different reasons. In these ways ferry mobility constellations profoundly increase and/or diminish the power of islanders and coasters to live their lives as they wish, helping and/or hindering their ways of moving. Travel motives and costs reveal these dynamics quite clearly.
