ABSTRACT

Meet Josie. Josie is 49 years old. She lives and works in Sointula, on Malcolm Island, a small island of 900. There are only half a dozen daily departures from Malcolm Island to the small, sleepy, logging community of Port McNeill on Vancouver Island, where one can find a few jobs, a few stores, a high school, and a highway to bigger places. The ferry, the Quadra Queen II, is a 41-year-old boat capable of cradling to sleep 30 cars at once for the 25-minute lull to “Port Big Deal” as the town is affectionately known.
