ABSTRACT

I began this book by asking where you were while reading it. Writing it was certainly a mobile affair for me. As I edit these words I have been a Gabriola Islander for the last twelve months. This move became a key part of my written reflections here, but other mobile practices deeply shaped my writing too. My words have been typed in places such as the Tim Horton’s coffee shop and “In the Beantime” coffee shop in Ladysmith, MadRona’s coffee shop on Gabriola, the Ladysmith branch of the Vancouver Island Public Library, my university office in Victoria, the Frankfurt and Vancouver airports, several airplane cabins and hotel rooms, my car, and of course ferry lineups, and a handful of ferriesespecially the Quinsam. My moods, the movements of people around me, and the places where I was, all colored what I wrote. My words are yarns I’ve spun along the way, and my interpretations are the places where I’m coming from.
