ABSTRACT

School mental-health practitioners often work directly with teachers, parents, administrators, and other school personnel to indirectly assist students who may be experiencing behavioral, emotional, social, or academic problems. This indirect service is referred to as school-based consultation. The purpose of this chapter is to explore the topic of school consultation, including its definition, its goals, and various models, and to offer an explanation and case example of school consultation based on cognitive-behavioral principles. Two specific components addressed in this chapter are the consulting school mental-health practitioner’s use of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) strategies to work with the teacher and/or parent to address the student’s problem, and teaching of CBT strategies to the teacher and/or parent to use directly with the student.
