ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the opportunity to examine in depth the case history and recent guidance intervention for one client, Carol.

Carol is not a real person, but the details below are drawn from the realities of the work of careers advisers with numerous clients. The experienced adviser will no doubt recognise some of the circumstances and dilemmas which Carol presents. The first part of the chapter outlines the sociological context, the family history and its effects and Carol’s experiences of guidance at different stages of her development. It then goes on to demonstrate, through a record of the dialogue during the careers advisory interview, how the adviser works with the fears and expectations which Carol is carrying and the specific ways in which the adviser uses herself to interact and enable Carol to move forward.
