ABSTRACT
My starting point in this book has been to suggest that the British and Roman Empires were very different in organisation and development and that the use of the Roman Empire to form an analogy for the British has stretched and distorted the archaeological and historical evidence. I have contended that many of the apparent similarities between the two imperial situations are a result of the British borrowing ideas from the Roman imperial context, and do not constitute some form of direct imperial inheritance.
