ABSTRACT

Most of the data were generated and prepared for formal analysis between 1994 and 1996, during an ‘Economic and Social Research Council’ funded project. Using ethnography, depth interviews, and materials from secondary sources (e.g. international bodybuilding magazines, steroid handbooks, published insider accounts), the research sought specifically to investigate supposed bodybuildingsteroids-violence associations. However, bodybuilding, drugs and risk more generally were subjected to detailed empirical investigation, thereby providing rich qualitative data for this study.
