ABSTRACT

Winnicott had for years been paediatrician at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, and had met hundreds of mothers and babies there before he even trained as an analyst. His thoughts on the psychological development of the tiny infant thus arise from two sources: from the infant brought him by the mother, and from the infant in us all brought him by his patients.
