ABSTRACT

A relationship starts with a beginning, when each partner comes together for the first

time. Within a partnership approach, the main aim of an introductory meeting would be to

meet in such a way that facilitates the possibility of building a partnership. The way the

introduction is conducted and the role the professional demonstrates may set the pattern

for later encounters. This chapter draws on the Negotiating Model described in Chapter 1

to give practical ideas for introducing a partnership. Methods of establishing role

responsibilities and contributions are examined. The more problematic issue of dealing

with a failure to carry out a role responsibility is also discussed.
