ABSTRACT
As discussed earlier, the question of the NL was historically posed dichotomously. Is language transfer of major importance in forming ILs or is it not? This is evident in such statements as:
• ”Language background did not have a significant effect on the way ESL learners order English morphemes” (Larsen-Freeman, 1978, p. 372).
