ABSTRACT

During the teenage years one’s body undergoes rapid and marked change. One is maturing sexually, emotionally, cognitively, and physically. The former slender child has entered the ‘growth spurt’ (Tanner and Davies 1985) and may suddenly find that he or she is taller or ‘bigger’ than most others in class. Not surprisingly, this can be an anxious time for some youth and a few resort to a variety of strategies to cope with these physical and emotional changes. One strategy is weight control.
