ABSTRACT

So far we have discussed style in relation to single words and short phrases. But we have to remember that the style of a text is not made by the writer or speaker’s making a succession of (usually spontaneous) separate choices. One choice affects another, and the overall stylistical ‘feel’ of a text derives from the pattern which all these specific choices make. Also, the kind of text being made exerts an overall influence over individual verbal choices. The boxing commentator is constrained by the genre to speak in a particular way, and to use particular kinds of words and sentences.
