ABSTRACT

Mrs. Powell is planning a lesson on the spread of Islam for her 10th grade world history course. She wants students to consider the ability of Islam to adapt to diverse global cultures as it spreads, a feature that has contributed to both its status as a world religion and its profound infl uence on world history. In addition to her content objective, Mrs. Powell has several literacy objectives. Knowing that there is an aesthetic element of literacy, she wants to help students gain a deeper appreciation for the beautiful art and architecture of Islam. Further, she wants students to be able to use architecture, particularly architectural function and form, as historical evidence. Finally, she wants to help students become more skilled in Internet research, with the ability to synthesize across hyperlinked multimodal online texts.
