ABSTRACT

Homer’s enchantress, Circe, entertains the followers of Ulysses in her palace, drugs them at a feast, then with her wand transforms them into swine, to join previous victims of her witchcraft. Ulysses, who sets out to rescue his men, is aided by Hermes. Hermes gives him a magic drug which immunizes him against Circe’s enchantments, so that when she tries to bewitch him he is able to draw his sword and master her. The men are restored and feast at Circe’s table, while Ulysses is taken to Circe’s bed.
