ABSTRACT

There may be fewer children nowadays who lose a parent through death. There are, however, many other circumstantial losses which children need to grieve. A particularly common loss for children is the breakdown of their parents' marriage. In chapter 7 we recognised that children do grieve and that their grief may often be denied by adults in the guise of 'protecting the children'. Children willhide their grief in different ways according to stages in their development and family patterns. However, just as adults can be helped with grieving, as outlined in chapters 9 and 10, so can children. In this chapter we describe ways of working with children who have suffered a loss.
