ABSTRACT

It has often been pointed out that ‘clinical psychology’ literally means ‘bedside psychology’, but although the term ‘clinic’ includes outpatient contact the recipients of psychological intervention are rarely bedridden or ‘ill’ in the usual sense (Woodworth, 1992). Despite the proposal of alternative titles such as ‘consultant psychologist’ or ‘health care psychologist’ the title ‘clinical psychologist’ has stuck. Clinical psychologists are health care professionals who mainly work in the fields of mental health or social services.
