ABSTRACT
As we saw in Chapter 4, it has long been the aim of governments to provide France with a single standardized national language - specifically the variety of French elaborated ('perfected', it was generally believed) by the grammarians of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and originally used largely by the aristocracy in Paris and Versailles.
