The Last Phase of the Republic

As already mentioned (page 132 above), postwar research concerning the Weimar Republic began by concentrating on its last phase, and with good reason: the object was to investigate the causes and stages of the failure of Weimar democracy and to explain the fatefill events that led in January 1933 to the takeover of state power by Hitler and his party. The main interest centred then, as it does now, on the breakdown ot'the 'great coalition' and the change to presidential government in March 1930, and the development of National Socialism into a mass movement.
