ABSTRACT

The aims of the primary curriculum in maintained schools, as set out in the first section of the Education Reform Act 1988, are to provide a balanced and broadly based curriculum that promotes the spiritual, moral, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society; and, prepares such pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. These aims are to be realized through the core and foundation subjects of the national curriculum and by religious education and other aspects of the basic curriculum. Religious education (RE) must be provided on a regular basis in every maintained school in addition to a daily act of worship.
