ABSTRACT

The evolution of mathematics curriculum developments including the national curriculum and formal assessment has called increasingly for schoolbased and schoolfocused support for primary teachers. The mathematics coordinator’s role has consequently emerged as one means of providing this support and utilizing teachers’ particular strengths. As a newly qualified teacher (NQT) working towards such a position your main task in this regard over the next few years will be to equip yourself with relevant knowledge and skills in order to give your colleagues this support. This will involve you becoming increasingly credible as a consultant, improving your own teaching, interpersonal and presentation skills, acquiring knowledge and demonstrating positive attitudes towards the teaching and learning of mathematics.
