ABSTRACT
The western region of the Balkans, including Albania, Kosovo, and Macedonia, was less important to the resolution of the war and the survival of the Ottoman Empire than Thrace was. Nevertheless, this region was the object of the national aspirations of Montenegro and Serbia and most of the aspirations of Greece. To a considerable degree, the goals of the Montenegrins and the Serbs overlapped in the Sandjak of Novi Pazar and in Kosovo.
