ABSTRACT
Many urban schools have a high proportion of ethnic minority parents and this poses problems of communication as well as creating a rich culture for the school. Smith and Tomlinson (1989:135) found that ‘one stereotyped belief which persists (among teachers) is that ethnic minority parents are ‘just like white working class parents apart from colour and belief.
