ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter, I discussed the current theories of what ‘cognitive development’ consists of, and described perception and cognition in infancy. In this chapter, I am going to outline what we know about the development of cognitive skills. After the influence of Piaget’s very abstract and general theory, interest has moved towards research which provides detailed accounts of children’s behaviour in more limited areas of cognition. I will describe some of these areas, and draw some conclusions about the developmental processes involved.
