ABSTRACT
People like to think of the ability to spell as rule-governed. A spelling mistake seems to imply a broken rule. But ask someone to give you examples of spelling rules and they will soon falter. Anyone who is literate will probably have long forgotten the structured way in which they were taught to read and write.
