A little later in the same article2 Mclntyre says that though a lot of time and energy is spent on assessment in current educational practice, very little information is obtained which helps teachers to teach. ‘Instead,’ he says, ‘we give pupils marks or grades, that is, we concentrate in judging them, on saying how “good” or “bad” they are, on putting them in “order of merit”.’
