‘Bump’ to birth
Dr Alfred Tomatis1 found that a baby in the womb will respond to music by moving or blinking. At five months in the womb the babies in his study responded to small units of sounds (phonemes), but what amazed him was that when babies heard different rhythms and different sounds they responded differently. The babies moved a particular muscle when they heard a particular sound. The more often they heard it, the more that response developed.
