In our view, the engine that drives self-regulation is a limited and depletable set of resources. Acts of self-control use this resource and drain it, which means that people sometimes become temporarily taxed of their self-control abilities. When this happens, so-called depleted people behave quite similarly to people with chronically low self-control.
