ABSTRACT

Surveillance cameras in taxicabs (hereafter simply referred to as ‘cabs’) are touted by those inside and outside the taxi industry as keeping drivers and passengers safe. What we will call ‘taxi-cams’ are a seemingly innocuous form of surveillance in which tiny cameras are mounted inside cabs – often near the rear-view mirrors – that record what goes on inside the cab so it can be downloaded later by police or others if need be. Cameras in cabs are said by their advocates to deter violence, prevent theft and provide evidence that facilitates prosecutions.
