ABSTRACT

The first point to note is that some of the results presented in this book— if not most—could have been derived by more orthodox methods. Some, such as the typical transportation study gravity model, were so derived. The fact remains that most of the results were not derived in this way, and we can safely conclude that entropy—maximising methods provide a useful and practical model—building tool. Typically, these methods are most useful in situations where several rather complex ideas or hypotheses have to be represented in a single theory in an internally consistent way. We also noted that interpretive insights were often gained, and that a path towards the development of dynamic models may have been opened, but these kinds of result are less important, at least at present.
