ABSTRACT

This area of corporate activity used to be anecdotally referred to as the ‘chairman’s wife syndrome’, or the support of activity according to whim or personal interest of senior management and their spouses. There are still some examples of this, such as Crealy Theme Parks in Devon and Cornwall. The MD, Angela Wright, heard about play pumps, which use a children’s roundabout to pump water from bore holes. While this fits with the Crealy belief that children learn through play, no evaluation or link to visitor numbers has been carried out. However, this does not mean that the programme has no value – the park has raised enough for three pumps to be sent to Africa.
