ABSTRACT

Film is a visual medium, but also a storytelling medium. All cultures tell stories and draw. There are also soundscapes in film that immerse us more in the experience of the film. In fact, sound is very important for creating mood: the tone of voice, the atmospheric sound, the Foley effects; all add to the immersive experience. I feel that going to see a movie or looking at a DVD is like sitting round a campfire and hearing a story that comes alive. In that way it is universal. However, in the characters, protagonists, and contexts of dominant Western films, this is not the case, not least because movies represent the imagination constructed by Eurocentric, hetero-patriarchal imaginings.
