Born or made? Dilemmas of destiny and development
The leadership dilemmas examined in this chapter are those which arise from the familiar
question ‘Are leaders born or made?’ After studying the chapter you will see how different
perspectives on the question offer different answers, drawing on differing beliefs or maps
about the nature of leadership. One map draws on assumptions about the characteristics of
the natural or predestined leader. The other assumes that leadership skills can be instilled
and nurtured, the so-called developmental position. We will see that these ideas relate to
the broader issues of nature versus nurture in human behaviours.
