ABSTRACT

Ken and Leah have lived in the same city their entire married life, 60 plus years. They married shortly after World War II, have three grown children and seven grandchildren scattered across the United States. In his late 80s, he is still able to drive (and at night!), making him a hit with many of their friends. The difficult part for many of the older couples is that they have few couple friends where both partners are still alive. “I think friends are terribly important,” Ken told us. “In fact, we are losing them at our age, and this is the thing that makes us very sad. I'd say in our married life we've had 15 to 20 couples we feel very close to and only one or two of those that are left are couples. Most singles that are left are women.”
