ABSTRACT

Dan, a 53-year-old white business consultant, has been married and divorced twice. He shares custody of his 12-year-old son with his second wife who lives nearby. Over coffee in a small bakery he tells us that whereas he is very social, a Seeker in fact, neither of his first two wives was comfortable around other couples. He had to make all the plans if they were going to socialize with other couples. When Dan and his second wife broke up, the little social life he had together with couples ended. “no one wants to go out with just me,” he said. Dan makes efforts to see his individual friends, but they usually squeeze him in during the week when they are free. On weekend nights, when he would like company to go to a movie or dinner, his friends are out with their spouses.
