ABSTRACT

The Common Core State Standards speaking/listening standards go beyond traditional speech instruction that typically involve students giving public speeches. These standards include the standard “present information, evidence, and reasoning in a clear and well-structured way appropriate to purpose and audience.” Achieving this standard entails more than the ability to give public speeches. Moreover, the standards recognize that there are a range of other literacy practices involved in oral interactions with others. To cite the standards (Common Core State Standards, 2010), this includes the ability to:

• Participate effectively in a range of interactions (one-on-one and in groups), exchanging information to advance a discussion and to build on the input of others.
